Audi A6 2.0 TDI

What is it? The more affordable 2.0-litre diesel variant of the Audi A6

THE AUDI A6 is a large car and large cars require large engines, right? By that logic, the A6’s base 2.0-litre diesel variant should have found very few takers. The reality, though, is quite different. The base diesel variant actually forms the bulk of A6 sales in India and that’s got a lot to do with it also being the most affordable A6 on sale. But as our drive revealed, it is a fairly well-rounded car in its own right.

Let’s focus on the engine first. Displacing a relatively modest 1968cc, this turbocharged motor produces 174bhp of power that goes to the front wheels. Now 174bhp may not seem like much on a car that weighs nearly 1.6 tonnes, but it never feels insufficient either. In fact, you will never be left wanting for power. There is a lovely and linear build of power right from low revs, and power delivery is effortless thereafter. The engine is also hard to fault for refinement; it runs quietly, with no vibrations intruding into the cabin. If there was a slight  grouse, it would be that the car’s otherwise brilliant eight-step CVT transmission feels a bit hesitant to downshift when you want instant power. 2013 Auto

What does work rather well though is the Drive Select system that allows you to tailor engine, gearbox, suspension and steering settings to your requirements. It can alter throttle responses to make the engine hold gears longer if you crave a sportier drive, or do the opposite for a more relaxed (and economical) outing behind the wheel. Likewise, you can also alter the level of suspension softness. Our suggestion would be to leave the air suspension set to ‘Comfort’ and watch the A6 simply steamroll the worst of potholes, but it’s the sportier ‘Dynamic’ setting that delivers the flatter ride at highway speeds. The steering does lack feel, though.

The A6 2.0 TDI also shares its fantastic cabin with its larger-hearted siblings. Detailing is brilliant, all surfaces are good to touch and there is no skimping on equipment either. That said, rear-seat passengers may be left wanting for under-thigh support from the low seat. The front seats, on the other hand, may look a size too small, but are actually quite supportive. 2013 Auto

And that’s a good thing because when you’re in the A6 2.0 TDI, it is as enjoyable being behind the wheel as it is being chauffeured around. That’s exactly what holds the key to the A6’s appeal. It is luxurious, comfortable and is also a reasonably fun car to pilot yourself. If you crave more power, you could opt for the more powerful petrol or diesel engines, but for the most part, the 2.0-litre diesel engine does a rather good job.
